Your home’s irrigation system could be responsible for gallons of wasted water, especially if it is programmed incorrectly, has a leak, or a sprinkler is angled the wrong way.  It is important to inspect your home’s irrigation system routinely and program the system to maximize efficiency.

Step-by-step information on how to ensure your irrigation is not wasting water can be found here

All retail public water suppliers are required by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (“TCEQ”) to prepare and adopt a DCP or Drought Contingency Plan.  The DCP intends to protect the health and safety of the community at large by maintaining an adequate supply of water and water pressure, not only during drought conditions but under ANY other water supply emergencies.  In order to always maintain a minimum household pressure of 35 psi, utilities must produce and enforce a drought plan, designed to decrease water consumption in times of very high usage. Outside irrigation may be restricted to achieve this goal. These plans are a requirement of the TCEQ.

The cumulative effect of everyone doing what they can to conserve water makes a big difference.  Some ways that you can conserve water include:

  • Reduce your shower time
  • Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth
  • Install water-efficient appliances
  • Check your toilets and fixtures for leaks
  • Water your yard in the morning or late evening
  • Run the dishwater, rather than washing the dishes by hand
  • Only run the dishwasher when it is full
  • Only run the washing machine it is full
  • Be conscious of water leaks from every faucet/sink/toilet in your house. At one drip per second, a faucet can leak 3,000 gallons in one year.
